The Office of the Vice President, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and dedicated community volunteers, successfully planted 10,000 mangrove propagules along the coastal areas of Barangay Tamban, Tinambac, Camarines Sur.
In a strong push for environmental sustainability and coastal resilience, the Office of the Vice President (OVP) Bicol Satellite Office, in partnership with local stakeholders, planted 10,000 mangrove propagules in Barangay Tamban, Tinambac, Camarines Sur last May 09.
This tree-planting initiative is a flagship environmental program led by Vice President Sara Duterte, aiming to restore and protect vital ecosystems across the country. The activity underscores the significant role of mangroves in sustaining marine biodiversity and shielding coastal communities from natural calamities.
Residents of Barangay Tamban, whose primary livelihood revolves around fishing, expressed their support for the project, noting the long-term benefits mangroves offer. These include providing a natural habitat for fish and other marine life, which contributes to more stable and abundant fish stocks.
Sean Jeffrey Bruzo, Technical Support Specialist from Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CENRO- GOA were also present during the event to highlight the ecological importance of mangroves stating that; “Ang mangroves po natin, they are considered as unsung heroes of out ecosystem. They serve as storm buffers or yung mangroves natin nag act siya as natural barriers o panangga ng natural calamities,” (Mangroves are considered unsung heroes of our ecosystem. They serve as natural storm buffers, protecting coastal areas from the impact of typhoons and storm surges.)
DENR experts also conducted a demonstration on the proper planting techniques to improve the survival rate of the propagules. Bruzo emphasized the importance of digging an adequate hole and ensuring the root collar is well-covered with soil.
Ito namang pahaba na ito, very easy lang siya itanim bale idiin mo lang siya sa mud pero dapat enough ma-cover niya ang ating at least ¾ of the body at nakalitaw lang ‘yung ¼ of the body,” (For the elongated propagules, it’s simple to plant them—just press them into the mud deep enough so that at least three-fourths of the body is submerged, leaving only one-fourth exposed,) he explained.
The Tinambac mangrove planting is among several reforestation activities under the “PagbaBAGo: A Million Trees Campaign”, which aims to plant one million trees nationwide before 2028. It also serves as a testament to the OVP’s commitment to environmental protection, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.

They serve as storm buffers or yung mangroves natin nag act siya as natural barriers o panangga ng natural calamities.”
