The Office of the Vice President–Southern Mindanao Satellite Office (OVP-SMSO) took part in the citywide tree-planting initiative spearheaded by the Davao City local government to strengthen environmental protection and promote climate resilience.
In a united effort to bolster environmental protection and climate resilience, the Office of the Vice President–Southern Mindanao Satellite Office (OVP-SMSO) joined the citywide tree planting activity recently launched by the Davao City local government.
A total of 3,000 mangrove propagules were planted along the coastline of the relocation site in Muslim Village, NHA Bangkal—an area identified as vulnerable to coastal erosion and flooding.
According to Archie Alfeche, Nursery In-Charge of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Davao City, mangroves play a vital role in protecting coastal communities: “Kani man gud na mangrove, mao man gud ni siya ang number 1 na depensa sa balod. Gahi man gud ni siya so dili siya dali mabali,” (Mangroves serve as the first line of defense against strong waves. Their sturdy structure makes them highly resilient and not easily broken.)
Alfeche also expressed gratitude to the OVP for its consistent participation in local environmental programs: “Kami pud nga gikan sa CENRO, nagpasalamat pud mi sa ilaha nga naga assist sila, naga tanom pud kay naka huna-huna man pud sila nga dakong tabang maong taga bulan sige gyud ni sila og tanom diri,” (The CENRO are thankful for their continued support. They help us plant regularly and understand the long-term value of this initiative. That’s why they plant here month after month.)
The OVP-Southern Mindanao Satellite Office has been actively contributing to the PagbaBAGo: A Million Trees Campaign, an environmental initiative that aims to plant one million trees by the year 2028.
As of July 2025, the OVP-SMSO has already planted 31,045 trees across Davao City and parts of North Cotabato—including fruit-bearing trees, forest species, and mangrove propagules.
The tree planting drive forms part of the OVP’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and disaster risk reduction across the region.
