In Antique, 29-year-old farmer Lenon Cangayda transformed his passion for agriculture into a thriving livelihood through the support of the Office of the Vice President’s Mag Negosyo Ta ‘Day (MTD) Program.
In the province of Antique, a young farmer has turned his passion for agriculture into a flourishing livelihood with the help of the Office of the Vice President’s Mag Negosyo Ta ‘Day (MTD) program.
Lenon Cangayda, 29, was born and raised in Antique where farming was a way of life for his family. Inspired by his agricultural roots, he later ventured into lettuce farming using hydroponics—a sustainable technique that grows crops with nutrient-rich water solutions instead of soil.
Starting his venture, however, was far from easy. With limited resources and equipment, he struggled to keep the business afloat, especially during harsh weather conditions like El Niño. But support came through the OVP’s MTD program, where he was one of the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) beneficiaries from Panay Island.
Through the program, Cangayda received a livelihood grant worth ₱15,000, which provided much-needed capital to sustain his farm operations: “Medyo mahirap po kasi, Ma’am, may El Niño. Medyo mahirap bumawi. Nagpapasalamat talaga ako sa ganitong program, medyo napunan yung mga gastos po.” (It was really difficult, especially during El Niño. Recovery was tough, but I am very thankful for this program. It helped cover many expenses.)
Today, Cangayda’s lettuce has reached markets not only across Antique but also as far as Boracay Island in Aklan. His farm now generates an estimated monthly income of around ₱40,000.
Grateful for the opportunity, he expressed his appreciation: “Maraming salamat po sa binigay ninyong tulong programa or livelihood. Malaking tulong po ito sa amin lalo na sa mga young generation po na gustong mag-umpisa ng business lalo na po dito sa farming,” (Thank you very much for the assistance and livelihood program you have provided. This is a great help for us, especially for the younger generation who wish to start their own business, particularly in farming.)
Cangayda is also encouraging the youth to explore the potential of agriculture and embrace innovative farming methods: “Magsimula po sa maliit, research din po lalo na sa kabataan—kasi 'yung farming pagdating sa kanila hindi pasok sa standard. Tulad nito, sexy itong para sa kabataan. Hindi lang kasi lettuce pasok sa hydroponics, pati din po mga crops.” (Start small, do your research—especially the youth. Many don’t see farming as meeting their standards, but with hydroponics, it can be attractive and modern. It’s not just lettuce; other crops can also thrive through this system.)
With his determination and the support of the OVP’s livelihood program, Cangayda continues to grow—not just lettuce but also hope for more young farmers to find opportunities in agriculture.
