The Office of the Vice President (OVP) has recognized Capitol Medical Center as a key healthcare partner for its invaluable support in providing medical and welfare assistance to underserved Filipinos—particularly in addressing urgent hospitalization needs and extending burial aid to families in crisis.
The Office of the Vice President (OVP) has honored Capitol Medical Center and the Barangay 101 Council of Tondo, Manila for their vital role in delivering medical and welfare assistance to underserved Filipinos, particularly in the areas of hospitalization and burial support.
As part of its annual recognition of partners, the OVP cited Capitol Medical Center in Metro Manila as one of its committed healthcare allies in the mission to serve indigent patients. Through its collaboration with the OVP, the hospital has been able to extend much-needed support to patients facing financial hardship.
“Partnering with the OVP has been a truly wonderful experience for both parties kasi we were able to help patients especially indigent patients in their hospitalization needs, and of course, nakakatulong din tayo na ma-discharge ‘yung mga pasyente natin,” (Partnering with the OVP has been a truly meaningful experience for both sides, as it allowed us to assist patients—especially those who are financially challenged—with their hospitalization needs. It also helped facilitate the discharge of patients who would otherwise be unable to leave due to unpaid medical bills,) Charles Tolentino, representative of Capitol Medical Center said.
He also emphasized the shared advocacy between the hospital and the OVP, saying; “Para makatulong tayo sa mga pasyente na nangangailangan ng tulong especially financially napakahirap ng buhay ngayon and what the Office of the Vice President is doing is helping indigent patients and other patients especially ease up the medical expenses is really helpful for the families affected by sickness,” (We want to help patients who are in need, especially those struggling financially, because life is very difficult these days. What the Office of the Vice President is doing—helping indigent and other patients to ease their medical expenses—is truly a big help for families affected by illness.)
Barangay 101 in Tondo also played a crucial role in the implementation of the OVP assistance programs at the grassroots level.
According to Barangay Captain William Ypon, the OVP programs significantly benefited their community stating, “Napakalaking tulong lalo na sa mga taga Maynila, unang-una ‘yung burial assistance natin, medical assistance at hospital bill assistance. Napakahalaga po lalo na isa ‘yung Maynila lalo na sa Tondo area, marami tayong mga residente na medyo salat talaga sa buhay na kailangang-kailangan talaga ‘yung tulong galing sa OVP,” (It’s a tremendous help, especially for the people of Manila. First and foremost, the burial assistance, medical assistance, and hospital bill support have been crucial. This is especially important in areas like Tondo, where many residents are really struggling and in dire need of the support provided by the OVP.)
However, Vice President Sara Z. Duterte recently confirmed that OVP will no longer be able to continue its Medical and Burial Assistance Program due to the removal of its line-item budget under the General Appropriations Act.
It’s heartbreaking that we can no longer fund medical and burial assistance. The line item was removed, and without budget allocation, we are forced to stop the program. Still, we are grateful for our partners in the healthcare sector who are willing to work with us again in the future, should funding be restored,) VP Sara said.
Despite the suspension of the program, the OVP continues to explore partnerships with hospitals and local government units as part of its broader commitment to serving the Filipino people, particularly the most vulnerable communities.
