Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte has said a partnership with the Department of Health will effectively bring health-related programs closer to young learners and the youth.
The announcement came as health experts called on parents to ensure their children have received necessary vaccines against diseases, including the pentavalent vaccine.
The 5-in-1 vaccine protects children from diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, hepatitis B, and pertussis.
A spike in the cases of pertussis was observed in the country recently, with 1,477 cases from January to April 2024.
Young children, including infants, are at risk and vulnerable to the disease that is transmitted through infected saliva droplets released during open coughing and sneezing.
To protect learners, wearing facemasks inside school premises has been recommended across the country by DepEd.
Duterte noted that the partnership with DOH will also allow learners to have more knowledge and a better understanding of other health-related issues, including the prevention of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and teenage pregnancies.
To address vaccine hesitancy, some health workers conduct free seminars and home visitations.
Dahil sa pagtaas ng mga kaso ng pertussis sa bansa kamakailan, nagbabala ang Department of Health (DOH) sa publiko na laging mag-ingat.
Sa datos ng DOH, umabot na sa 1,477 ang kaso ng pertussis sa bansa simula Enero hanggang Abril 6, 2024.
Ang pertussis ay nakakahawang sakit na maaaring makuha sa pamamagitan ng infectious droplet mula sa pag-ubo o pagbahing at mas mapanganib din ito sa mga kabataan.
Ayon kay Vice President at Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte, nakikipagtulungan sila sa Department of Health upang mabisang mapalapit ang mga programang pangkalusugan sa mga kabataang mag-aaral.
“Gagawin natin, mayroon ding catch-up health programs in partnership with the Department of Education hindi lang sa pertussis pati na sa maraming health programs ng Department of Education tulad ng HIV prevention, prevention ng teenage pregnancy, at iba pang mga catch-up vaccination na kailangan gawin ng ating Department of Health,” ayon kay Inday Sara
Nag anunsyo din ang mga eksperto ukol sa kahalagahan ng kalusugan at nanawagan sa mga magulang na tiyakin na ang kanilang mga anak ay nakatanggap ng mga kinakailangang bakuna laban sa mga sakit, kabilang ang pentavalent vaccine.
Pinoprotektahan ng pentavalent vaccine o 5-in-1 na bakuna ang mga bata mula sa diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, hepatitis B, at pertussis.
Ang mga bata, kabilang ang mga sanggol ang apektado at madaling kapitan ng sakit na nakukuha sa pamamagitan ng laway o pag-ubo at pagbahing.
Upang maprotektahan ang mga mag-aaral, ang pagsusuot ng facemask sa loob ng paaralan ay inirekomenda sa buong bansa ng DepEd.
Dagdag ni Inday Sara na ang pakikipagtulungan nila sa DOH ay magbibigay-daan din sa mga mag-aaral na magkaroon ng higit na kaalaman at mas mahusay na pag-unawa sa iba pang isyu na may kaugnayan sa kalusugan, kabilang ang pag-iwas sa human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) at teenage pregnancies.
