OVP Libreng Sakay Program Continues to Assist Filipino Commuters; Marks Its 3-Millionth Passenger
The Office of the Vice President’s Libreng Sakay Program has reached yet another milestone after recording its three-millionth passenger on January 21, underscoring the program’s impact on the daily lives of Filipino commuters.
Snow Verzosa—a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) employee from Cebu City—was identified as the three-millionth passenger. According to Verzosa, her experience on the Libreng Sakay bus was marked by comfort and ease.
Based on the latest passenger count, Libreng Sakay has served a total of 3,001,787 passengers since its launch in 2022. More than one million of these passengers are from the National Capital Region, followed by Cebu Province with 462,876.
To date, the Libreng Sakay bus in Bacolod has served 401,152 passengers; Naic, Cavite, recorded 179,412; and Tacloban City logged 85,359. The program also provides significant relief to thousands of commuters in Davao City, where a strategic rotating schedule allows the bus to cover major areas of the city throughout the week. This ensures that different sectors of the workforce and student population can benefit from the service.
Dabawenyos noted that the initiative significantly minimizes transportation expenses, with some saving up to ₱30–₱35 per trip, amounting to over ₱100 in savings per week.
“Nagpasalamat pud mi nga naay Libreng Sakay kay maka-save pud mi sa among pamasahe,” (We are grateful for the free rides because they help us save on transportation costs), said Loida Sirapika.
Senior citizens also expressed appreciation for the program’s comfort, especially during peak hours when waiting times for public utility vehicles (PUVs) can reach 30 minutes.
As transportation remains a challenge for many, the OVP Libreng Sakay Program serves as vital support—a reminder that direct interventions provide immediate relief and dignity to many Filipinos.
