The Office of the Vice President - Caraga Satellite Office spearheads the distribution of food box assistance to fisherfolk communities in Buenavista Island, Surigao City, as part of the RIICE (Relief for Individuals in Crisis and Emergencies) Program.
In a continued effort to reach underserved communities, the Office of the Vice President (OVP), through its Caraga Satellite Office, recently extended much needed assistance to fisherfolks in Buenavista Island, Surigao City under the Relief for Indigents and Individuals in Crises and Emergencies (RIICE) program.
A total of 104 beneficiaries received RIICE food boxes, each containing five kilos of rice and assorted canned goods, helping families cope with the challenges brought by adverse weather conditions that have disrupted their primary source of livelihood—fishing.
Among those beneficiaries was Luciano Cino, a senior citizen and long-time resident of the island where he shared how recent storms have not only made fishing difficult but have also affected their agricultural yields, particularly coconut farming.
“Minus, minus ang pagkuha og isda tapos sa bukid sab minus kay gibagyo man ta, among kalubihan minus gihapon,” (We catch fewer fish now, and our coconut harvest is also minimal because the storms have damaged our trees,) Cino explained.
Expressing his gratitude, Cino lauded the OVP’s efforts to reach far-flung communities like theirs; “Nagpasalamat mi kay naabot diri sa Buenavista, dako among pasalamat sama ani karon nga naay gihatag na food bags pasalamat mi og dako. Sus, pila nani ka adlaw namo mahurot sir maong nagpasalamat ko og dako sa inyo na naabot mo diri sa among lugar,” (We’re very thankful that the Office of the Vice President was able to come here to Buenavista. These food boxes mean a lot to us—they will last us several days.)
The relief distribution is part of the OVP’s RIICE program, which is designed to deliver timely assistance to Filipinos affected by natural disasters, economic hardships, and other emergencies. The program underscores the OVP’s commitment to inclusivity by ensuring that even geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas are not left behind.
By addressing immediate food needs, the RIICE program serves as a critical lifeline for communities like Buenavista Island, where livelihoods are highly vulnerable to environmental conditions.
