Commuters in Tacloban queue up to board the Office of the Vice President’s (OVP) Libreng Sakay bus—an initiative that continues to ease the daily travel expenses of residents, especially those from resettlement areas.
To help ease the daily expenses of Filipinos, the Office of the Vice President (OVP) continues to implement its Libreng Sakay program—an initiative that provides free transportation services to commuters across the country.
Currently, nine OVP Libreng Sakay buses are operating in various parts of the Philippines. In Tacloban City, one of these buses travels daily from downtown Tacloban to Barangay Tagpuro and vice versa, serving residents—particularly those living in resettlement sites—who often have to travel long distances to reach the city center.
For many commuters, the program has provided much-needed relief from the rising cost of transportation. One of them is Nelia Calipara, a resident of Barangay Tagpuro and a minimum wage earner.
According to her, the free bus rides have helped her save a portion of her income that would otherwise go to daily fares: “Nakikita ko kasi pag dumadaan, kaya natutuwa ako kasi nakakatipid na ako sa pamasahe ko,” (I see the bus passing by every day, and I’m really happy because I can save on my transportation expenses.)
She added that the program is not only beneficial for her but also for many others in Tacloban who struggle with transportation costs: “Malaking tulong na rin ito, lalo na sa kapwa ko taga Tacloban. Maganda ito, nakakatipid sila,” (This is a big help, especially for my fellow Tacloban residents. It really allows us to save money.)
The Libreng Sakay initiative stands as a testament to the OVP’s continuing effort to deliver timely and responsive public service—one that addresses the real and pressing needs of ordinary Filipinos.

Dagdag pa niya, hindi lamang siya ang nakikinabang kundi pati ang marami pang taga-Tacloban na hirap sa gastusin sa biyahe: “Malaking tulong na rin ito, lalo na sa kapwa ko taga-Tacloban. Maganda ito, nakakatipid sila.”
Ang Libreng Sakay program ay patunay ng patuloy na pagsisikap ng OVP na maghatid ng maagap at makataong serbisyo publiko—isang hakbang na tunay na tumutugon sa mga pang-araw-araw na pangangailangan ng karaniwang Pilipino.
