Filipinos around the country commemorate the bravery and heroism of every Filipino soldier who fought for the independence of our country during the Second World War.
In Davao City, a funeral wreath was laid in front of the Veterans Memorial Monument in Bangoy Street, a memorial service was also offered last April 09, 2024.
The local government of Davao also acknowledged the oldest war veteran residing in Davao City, Teofilo ‘Lolo Filo’ Gamutan, who served as the commanding officer of the 84th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army Reserve in Bohol.
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte offered a tribute to our fallen heroes.
“Bataan may be miles away from us here in Mindanao, but the significance of the various battles of World War II and the horrors that they experienced must remain in our collective consciousness,” Mayor Sebastian Duterte said.
Vice President Inday Sara Duterte also recognized the sacrifices of every man behind the country’s independence.
In her statement, the vice president said that all war veterans are unique examples of bravery and love for our motherland.
“Sila ay natatanging halimbawa ng tapang at pagmamahal sa bayan. Ang kanilang hangarin na ipagtanggol ang dangal at integridad ng ating bansa sa panahon ng digmaan ay inspirasyon na dapat nating tularan at alagaan.” Inday Sara said.
(They are unique examples of courage and love for the country. Their desire to defend the honor and integrity of our country in times of war is an inspiration that we must cherish.)
Ginugunita ng mga Pilipino sa buong bansa ang ipinamalas na kagitingan at kadakilaan ng mga Pilipinong sundalo na lumaban para sa bayan noong Pangalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig.
Sa Davao City, isang bulaklak ang inialay sa harap ng monumento ng mga sundalong beterano sa Bangoy Street, kasabay nito ang pagdaos ng isang memorial service.
Kinilala ng lokal na pamahalaan ang naging kontribusyon ng pinakamatandang war veteran na naninirahan sa Davao City na si Teofilo ‘Lolo Filo’ Gamutan na dating nagsilbi bilang Commanding Officer ng 84th infantry battalion ng Philippine Army Reserved sa Bohol, kung saan siya ipinanganak.
Nag-iwan din ng mensahe ang Alkalde ng Davao City na si Sebastian Duterte para sa lahat ng mga beteranong sundalo na nasawi noong World War II.
