Vice President Sara Duterte graced the opening of the 27th Davao Agri Trade Expo and the 8th Davao Investment Conference (ICON) held at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City.
During the event, Vice President Duterte took the opportunity to tour the trade exhibits and engage with several exhibitors, emphasizing the importance of fostering local and foreign investments in the region.
In her speech, the Vice President expressed gratitude to investors for their continued interest in Davao City, highlighting the city’s potential as a hub for business growth. She also addressed the persistent challenge of corruption, describing it as one of the biggest obstacles to trade and investment in the country.
“Corruption increases the cost of ease in doing business. Investors often raise concerns about this in the Philippines. It deters responsible investors, it creates a climate of uncertainty where contracts are not honored, and rules are not applied equally. For developing nations, consequences are severe. For the Philippines, opportunities are lost, and progress is adhered of, unseen and unkept. No serious investor would choose to commit capital were laws can be bent and where decisions are made not in courtrooms but behind closed doors,” VP Sara said.
She called for stronger institutions and transparent public service to ensure that governance remains free from corruption, “We must ensure that our institutions are stronger than corruption. We must build systems that will give merit not manipulation. Systems with integrity are not the exception, that’s the standard. We, of course, all Filipinos are committed to this fight. We should reform laws, strengthen oversite and ensure that public service is exactly that,” she added.
The event was organized by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Incorporated (DCCCII), and attended by numerous business leaders, investors, and industry experts.
