Vice President Sara Z. Duterte expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the families affected by the maritime tragedy involving the vessel ‘MV Trisha Kerstin 3’, which sank near Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan last Monday, January 26.
In a statement issued on her Facebook page, the Vice President conveyed her condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the incident, describing the tragedy as a painful loss for the nation.
The Office of the Vice President also called on the public to join in prayer for the safety of the passengers who remain missing, as search and rescue operations continue. VP Sara further offered prayers for the strength, safety, and courage of rescue personnel who are working tirelessly amid dangerous sea conditions to locate survivors.
Alongside her message of sympathy and prayer, in an interview by “Alvin & Tourism”, the Vice President emphasized the importance of maritime safety, urging the public to remain vigilant when travelling by the sea. She reminded passengers to always wear life jackets, avoid sea travel during bad weather or storm warnings, and strictly follow the instructions of ship captains and crew members.
The Vice President also underscored the need to prevent vessel overloading, remain cautious while onboard, especially during rough seas and ensure awareness of safety equipment such as life buoys, fire extinguishers, and emergency kits. Passengers were also advised to always keep children under close supervision and to bring sufficient water, food, and first aid supplies, particularly for long journeys.
Lastly, VP Sara reiterated the government’s concern for the welfare of all affected in the incident and hoped that continued prayers and cooperation would aid ongoing rescue efforts.
