Amid rising transport fares and worsening traffic nationwide, the Office of the Vice President (OVP) continues to ease the burden of Filipino commuters through its OVP Libreng Sakay Program, benefiting over 2.8 million passengers as of November last year.
Amid rising transport fares and worsening traffic conditions across the country, the Office of the Vice President (OVP) has continued to provide relief to Filipino commuters through its OVP Libreng Sakay Program, which has now served more than 2.8 million passengers as of November last year.
Since its launch in 2022, the program has offered free, safe, and reliable transportation to thousands of Filipinos daily, particularly workers, students, senior citizens, and low-income commuters. OVP records show that a total of 2,864,677 passengers has benefited from the initiative from 2022 to November 2025.
A milestone was recorded in 2025 when Jacob, a commuter traveling from Philcoa to Quezon Avenue, was recognized as the program’s two-millionth passenger, highlighting the growing reach and impact of the free transport service.
In July last year, the OVP further demonstrated its commitment to public service by extending the operation of Libreng Sakay buses until midnight to assist passengers stranded by heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon (habagat) in Metro Manila.
At present, nine (9) OVP Libreng Sakay buses are operating across key areas in the country. Four (4) units serve Metro Manila, one (1) operates in Naic, Cavite, while additional buses are deployed in Cebu, Bacolod City, Davao City, and Tacloban City, Leyte.
Commuters from various regions have expressed gratitude for the program’s positive impact on their daily lives.
Sana madagdagan ‘yung unit para whole week meron na,” (It has been a great help to us—those who have nothing can avail of the service for free, and even laborers are also accommodated at no cost. We hope the number of units will increase so the service can be available throughout the entire week,) Rey, a passenger from Davao City said.
In Tacloban City, Rolvin shared that the program has been especially beneficial to senior citizens, noting the comfort and cleanliness of the buses. Meanwhile, Edelyn Magpili, a commuter from Metro Manila, said the savings from free transportation allow her to allocate more money for her children’s daily needs.
The OVP Libreng Sakay Program remains part of the Vice President’s broader efforts to ease the burden of rising living costs and improve access to essential services, particularly for vulnerable sectors, reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive and people-centered public service.
